Camp One Step Headed to the Nation’s Capital on April 7th, 2019
Camp One Step Heads to the Nation’s Capital!
On April 7th, over 30 of our campers headed to Washington D.C. for a week of exploration, education and advocacy. Of course, they are surrounded by new and old friends they have made at Camp One Step, affectionately referred to as their Camp Family.
This biennial program is for high school students, typically 14-18 years of age, led by Co-Directors Linsey Smith and Adam Petraglia. Our campers will explore the nation’s capital, visiting some of the great sights like the Smithsonian Museums, Iwo Jima Memorial, and lots of others. Linsey and Adam have planned some exciting surprises for the campers.
On Wednesday April 10th, our campers will participate in Advocacy Day. They will meet with members of both the House and Senate, to touch on their experiences fighting childhood cancer. It is an exciting time as we are proud to assist in teaching our campers to be their own advocate for their healthcare concerns as cancer survivors.
Please be aware that our campers do not select with whom they would be meeting with on Advocacy Day. Prior to the program, the campers were supplied with the information on who their elected representatives and senators are for their district and state, respectively. The campers then crafted letters communicating their journey and concerns as pediatric cancer survivors, and as to why pediatric cancer research and advocacy is important.
These letters are then sent to the camper’s respective elected local/state officials, along with a request to meet while we are in DC. Most campers on this program have not had the opportunity to vote. A meeting between our campers’ and an elected official does not in any way constitute an endorsement of the official or any policy position held by or affiliated with him/her. Camp One Step is not affiliated with any political party and does not receive any funding from the government.
