How did you get involved with Camp One Step?

A google search during my nursing school days led me to discover Camp One Step. I had developed a love for working with oncology patients and wanted a way to connect with them outside of the hospital or classroom.

How long have you been involved with our organization?

I started volunteering in 2015 and have been hooked ever since!

What volunteer roles have you held (includes volunteering for a Camp One Step event or TOS)?

You may recognize me from being a counselor in one of many programs, including Summer Camp, Sibling Camp, Dude Ranch, Family Camp, Washington DC, or Winter Camp. Additionally, for the past several years I have served as one of the Program Leaders with EXCEL during week one of Summer Camp.

What keeps you coming back to Camp One Step?

That’s simple – the people – campers and volunteers. The energy, laughter, and happiness felt during a Camp One Step program is addictive. It is nearly impossible to leave a program without countless new memories and friendships.

What do you love the most about the program you lead?

A year between camp programs is too long to wait. Just when the post Summer Camp blues hit, Winter Camp springs up to remind us that our Camp Family is around year-round. Winter Camp brings a fun spin to the many of our favorite camp activities all while navigating the joys of Wisconsin winter weather.

What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give campers?

Give yourself the chance to feel the magic of camp. Get lost in the activities and atmosphere around you. Camp is a community and everyone is there for a collective goal – to add new joy and laughter to our lives!

What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give new or interested volunteers?

The strength and stories of the people you meet while at Camp cannot be matched. Camp has brought some of the most genuine, kind, and caring people into my life. Be open to meeting new people and experiencing new things. Allow yourself to be inspired. Camp is about figuring out what makes you unique, and sharing it with those around you. Camp would not be a success without a volunteer base full of people with unique talents and skills. You can belong here.

What is your current professional work/role?

I am an Oncology nurse working in Milwaukee!

What are some of your interests outside of camp?

My time is filled with friends and family. I am constantly on the go looking for a new great adventure.
