Summer Camp

How did you get involved with Camp One Step?

When I was in high school, my bestie was a camper and was always sharing these amazing stories of her adventures with camp and the friendships she made.  When we were both old enough to volunteer, she invited me to join her at Summer Camp and I’ve been volunteering with Camp One Step ever since!

How long have you been involved with the organization?

My first Summer Camp experience was in 1995 and I’ve been volunteering every year since then!

What volunteer roles have you held at camp?

  • Summer Camp – Counselor, Program Leader, Orientation Committee, Programs Coordinator, Program Director
  • Winter Camp – Counselor, Program Director
  • Utah Ski Program – Counselor
  • Junior Board – Founding Member

What keeps you coming back to camp?

The deep and lasting connections developed at camp are incomparable.  The friends I made my first year at camp in 1995 are the people I consider my chosen family today, and it’s a family that just keeps growing year over year.  Being a part of the camp community has been the most affirming and supportive thing in my life and I am truly grateful for all of my relationships born from camp.

What do you love the most about the program you lead?

Nothing gives me more joy than the opportunity to be a part of the growth and change our campers and volunteers experience, whether they come to camp once or they return to us year over year.  Trying something new, testing boundaries, making friends, creating self-worth, discovering new interests, skills, and passions, learning more about ourselves and the world around us…these are the Summer Camp moments our campers and volunteers experience that I treasure the most.

What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give to campers & volunteers?

Be open to the experience.  Give yourself permission to be silly.  Try one new thing every day – whether it’s a new activity, making a new friend, or just doing something you’d never do back home.

What are some of your interests outside of camp?

Outside of camp, I enjoy spending time with my nephews, reading, traveling, and counting down to the next time I can be at camp!
