Program Coordinator Katie Hogan
How did you get involved with Camp One Step?
I became friends with a long-time Camp One Step volunteer and she introduced me to her social circle, which was mostly comprised of other Camp volunteers and former campers. Once I started hearing Camp stories and meeting the incredible people who pour their hearts into Camp, I knew I had to experience it for myself!
How long have you been involved with the organization?
Two years
What volunteer roles have you held?
I have been a Summer Camp counselor with both Excel and Stepping Up, a Sibling Camp counselor, and a Winter Camp counselor with Excel. I also ran a half marathon with Team One Step to raise money for Camp, and was preparing to run the Chicago Marathon with TOS but got injured.
What keeps you coming back to Camp One Step?
The people! The campers are the coolest, most interesting, kindest bunch of kids you’ll ever meet. Watching them play and create and explore is an absolute gift. And Camp One Step staff and volunteers are, without exception, the most fun group of humans to be around.
What do you love the most about the program you lead?
Winter Camp is special for so many reasons, but one is that I think the holiday season just puts everyone in an extra good mood! And the winter activities like the Santa Cruise and tubing are always a huge hit.
What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give campers?
Get outside of your comfort zone! Camp gives you the opportunity to experience so many new things in a totally supportive environment—take advantage of it and we will be right here cheering you on!
What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give new or interested volunteers?
Get ready to fall in love! Once you experience the magic of Camp and the relationships you build with your campers and fellow volunteers, there is no way you can imagine your life without it. Also, yes it is normal to be this tired! Every Camp program I have experienced has been absolute whirlwind and I pretty much plan for a full day of sleep to recover afterward.
What are some of your interests outside of camp?
I love reading, hiking, baking, Formula 1, kayaking, Chicago summer street festivals, and finding the best bookstore in every city I visit.
