How did you get involved with Camp One Step?
My involvement with Camp One Step began as a camper. That first summer I was in the Excursion program, signed up for week 1, and loved it so much that I talked to Dr. Baum and was able to stay for week 2 as well!
How long have you been involved with the organization?
I have been involved with Camp One Step since 1993 when I began as a camper. In 1998, I started as a counselor in the Stepping Up program.
What volunteer roles have you held?
I am currently serving as the CONNECTED Program Director, and have also been a Director, Assistant Director, Staffing Coordinator, Group Leader, and Counselor with Winter Camp. I am also currently serving as the Programs Coordinator with Summer Camp, and was previously the Summer Camp Director, a Program Leader, Counselor, Staffing Coordinator, and Orientation Leader. I also currently serve as a counselor with the Dude Ranch Program, and a facilitator with the Seabees Leadership Program. Previously, I served as the co-director for the Washington, D.C. Program, a day-of-event volunteer with the Campfire Ball and Poker Tournament, and as a counselor at Family Camp. My unofficial (though some might say official) position is also as the “camp song guy” and crazy hat/hair guru =)
What keeps you coming back to Camp One Step?
What keeps me coming back to Camp One Step is the community of campers, families, volunteers, staff, donors, supporters, and partners. What we build together is more than just an experience, it is a true bond that connects us far beyond our time at camp. As a camper, I received so much through the Camp One Step programs, and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to keep the dream of Dr. Baum going as a volunteer and program director for many more generations of campers.
What do you love the most about the program you lead?
What excites me most about the program I lead is that CONNECTED is all about bringing camp, community and connections to you. CONNECTED is reaching campers and families who may not be able to attend an in-person program. We are trying new things in the digital space, and are able to reach beyond barriers, such as treatment schedules, geography, and hospital stays to meet our community where they are… how cool is that!
What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give campers?
To our campers, I encourage you to take advantage of the possibilities offered to you through Camp One Step. Experience things you wouldn’t normally try, discover your fullest potential, expand your horizons, and make your time at camp a magical one. This is a truly special community you are part of!
What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give new or interested volunteers?
To our volunteers, you are the heartbeat of camp and breathe life into all of our Camp One Step programs. It is because of your dedication, compassion, kindness, and willingness to serve our campers and families in this way that we are able to provide a place where kids with cancer can just be kids. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a lasting impact in the lives of others, then Camp One Step is the place for you!
What are some of your interests outside of camp?
Outside of camp, I enjoy going fishing and camping, playing softball, volleyball and tennis, hanging out with my 3 amazing nephews, taking road trips, and working on a wide-range of home improvement projects.
