How did you get involved with Camp One Step?

My closest friends have been volunteering at Camp One Step for years and talked about how special it was so I had to check it out. I was obviously hooked after my first camp!

How long have you been involved with our organization?

My first camp was Milwaukee Day Camp 2024 and I’ve been to multiple Day Camps and Winter Camps since then.

What volunteer roles have you held (includes volunteering for a Camp One Step event or TOS)?

I’ve been both a counselor and group leader at Day Camp and Winter Camp. I’m now looking forward to taking on this role as a Program Coordinator of Winter Camp to help make it as special as it’s been for all the years I’ve been volunteering!

What keeps you coming back to Camp One Step?

Camp is very welcoming and everyone is always so happy to be there! It gives you time to take a step back from the real world and realize what’s really important. I always appreciate the connections I’ve built and memories that I’ve made. It’s also awesome to see the campers grow year to year and reconnect with the other campers they’ve made friends with at past camps.

What do you love the most about the program you lead?

I love Winter Camp because campers get to end the year hanging out with others they sometimes only see at camp. The dance on the last night also gives everyone a chance to have fun, reflect on the past year, and ring in the New Year surrounded by others who support and care about each other.

What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give campers?

I’d encourage campers to let loose and be themselves at camp because it’s a very accepting and supportive place! Camp makes a huge effort to make activities accessible for all capabilities and, therefore, it’s a great place to try new things and be adventurous.

What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give new or interested volunteers?

I’d tell new volunteers that camp is really a place for everyone, volunteers and campers alike! When I first decided to volunteer, I was very nervous that I didn’t have enough experience working with kids and I wouldn’t know what to do, or how to connect. I quickly learned that camp provides you with the resources you need to succeed and the campers are so nice that you’ll instantly feel like you belong and are making a difference.

What is your current professional work/role?

I am a lawyer.

What are some of your interests outside of camp?

Outside of camp I love to explore my city, Chicago, by trying out new restaurants and exploring new neighborhoods. I also love traveling, reading, and playing board games with friends.
