Meet your Team One Step Leaders

Coach Jen

I volunteer to coach for TOS because I want to bring my love of running to our team!  I love helping new marathoners conquer new distances running and gain the confidence to run a marathon and encouraging experienced runners to achieve their goals.  I also love helping team members achieve goals for a goal bigger than themselves – sending kids to Camp One Step!

I have been involved with Camp since 2009, and TOS since 2011.  It is a great way for me to combine my love of running with my love for camp.  It also reminds me that I get to run, and that when the run gets hard I can dig deep and think about all that our campers go through to give me inspiration to persevere.

Team Captain – Brian

Running for Team One Step allows me to be a part of something that’s bigger than myself.  It’s about being able to contribute to the pure joy that kids experience at the numerous camps.  I’ve met many great people on this team through the years, all of us coming from different backgrounds but coming together for one common goal.  That goal drives us to push through every run because we know we’re all in this together, even if we are running alone most days.  The marathon may be the finale, but the journey is more important than the destination.  Throughout that journey you find out a lot about yourself, your teammates, and the kids and families you help along the way.  Furthermore, every admin, coach, parent and camper has always shown the highest level of appreciation for each and every runner and supports us in any way possible.  The sense of community is extraordinary.

Q) When I register for Team One Step, am I automatically registered for the event of my choice?

A) No. Signing up for Team One Step guarantees you a spot on our team and reserves your entry into the Event. In addition, you are responsible for registering for the race itself by following a unique link that will be sent to you in your registration confirmation email. We will provide you with detailed instructions once you join!

Q) I’m nervous about fundraising. What resources do you provide?

A) We are here for you every step of the way! We provide you with a fundraising page that you can personalize and send to your friends and family. We also provide images for emails and testimonials to use on social media throughout the season, along with videos about camp. We also have team captains who are alumni of Team One Step and are happy to share how they have successfully fundraised for our campers.

Q) How long do I have to raise the funds?

A) For each event you have until approximately one month prior to the event date to fulfill your fundraising requirement. We ask that you provide a credit card when you register to secure your impactful commitment. Your card will only be charged if you do not meet the minimum commitment. if you have not met the full minimum commitment, your credit card will be charged the difference. (For some events, such as the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, we request that each person has raised at least $300 by the end of April to help cover the cost of entries).

(Q) If I get injured during training or can no longer participate in the Marathon, am I still required to fundraise to the minimum?

A) We understand that circumstances change and that a lot can happen between deciding to race and the event itself. However, you are still responsible for meeting your fundraising minimum, regardless of whether you can participate in the race or not. The only exception is for individuals who have a valid medical excuse, and can provide appropriate documentation. Even in the event of injury, we hope that you will honor your commitment and continue to fundraise despite not being able to race.
