Activities like snow tubing, cardboard sled regattas, and snowball fights mixed with board games, arts & crafts, and STEAM projects will pack the schedule. And of course, no Winter Camp is complete without our annual ‘Eve of the Eve’ dance. Current Safety Strategies2024-08-16T12:03:04-05:00

Camp One Step is committed to ensuring the health and safety of the individuals who participate in our camps.  With our camper and volunteer wellbeing in mind, the following safety strategies are in place for all in-person camps:

  • Routine childhood vaccinations, which include diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and chicken pox, are required.  Medical exemptions for campers may be requested and will be reviewed by the Medical Director and Physician Advisor.  COVID-19 and influenza vaccines are recommended, but not required.
  • Pre-camp health screening is required
  • Masking is optional. Masks will be available for those desiring one.  For travel programs that include air travel, masks will be required when traveling through the airport and when on the plane.
  • HEPA filters will be used in shared sleeping rooms (HEPA filters will only be available at local programs, not travel programs)

Camp One Step encourages any individuals at an increased risk of infection to consult with their healthcare team prior to attending camp to ensure that an in-person camp is a good fit.  If you have any questions or concerns about the above, please send questions to Medical Director, Susie Burke at [email protected].

Camp One Step is so grateful to the community for continuing to put health and safety at the forefront of all that we do.  We hope to see you at camp!

Thank you to the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation for their support of Winter Camp.

And thank you to Silent Events for their support of our annual Eve of the Eve dance at Winter Camp!

Meet your Program Leaders

Lexi Chopp
Lexi Chopp, Program Director

Lexi first got involved with Camp One Step as a camper. After years of encouragement from her Nurse Practitioner, and now dear friend, she reluctantly went to Summer Camp. Lexi said her world changed that summer in the very best way, and she jumped at opportunities to try new camps throughout the year after that.  Since 2004, Lexi has been involved with camp – first as a camper, then counselor, program leader, and program coordinator for various camps and programs throughout the year including being a counselor at Summer Camp and Dude Ranch, Program Coordinator for Winter Camp and CONNECTED Programs, and Program Leader for Stepping Up at Summer Camp.

Katie Selander, Program Coordinator

After losing both of her parents to cancer, Katie knew she wanted to give back. Her older sister told her about Camp One Step and after her first camp she was hooked! Katie started volunteering with Camp One Step in 2007 as a counselor at Summer Camp in the Standard Program. Currently she is serving as one of the Program Leaders for Standard Camp at Summer Camp, Director for Sibling Camp, and the Program Coordinator for Winter Camp.  She has also been a counselor for Family Camp, Brian Tumor Family Camp, Chicago Day Camp, Washington, D.C., Dude Ranch, and CONNECTED. Katie has even run for Team One Step in the Chicago Marathon!

Katie Hogan, Program Coordinator

Katie started volunteering with Camp One Step after becoming friends with a long-time Camp One Step volunteer who introduced her to her social circle, which was mostly comprised of other Camp volunteers and former campers. Once Katie started hearing Camp stories and meeting the incredible people who pour their hearts into Camp, she knew she had to experience it for herself.  Katie has now been volunteering with Camp for two years and has been a Summer Camp counselor with both Excel and Stepping Up, a Sibling Camp counselor, and a Winter Camp counselor with Excel. She also ran a half marathon with Team One Step to raise money for Camp, and was preparing to run the Chicago Marathon with TOS but got injured.

Our Medical Team

Camp One Step’s Medical Director, Susie Burke, leads our volunteer medical team. The Camp One Step medical team is comprised of volunteer health care professionals who have a passion for working with children and adolescents who are or have experienced the challenges of a life threatening illness. Even though it is important to have staff with pediatric oncology experience, we also welcome staff with other clinical backgrounds such as general pediatrics, adult oncology, emergency, and ICU to name a few. The medical staff work closely together in teams to address the medical needs of each camper. Our goal is to promote the health and well-being of the campers in an atmosphere of fun.
