How did you get involved with Camp One Step?

I started as a camper when I was about 15 years old. I heard about camp through the social worker at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and my parents thought it would be a great experience.

How long have you been involved with our organization?

I enjoyed my time as a camper and transitioned into a volunteer role in 1999. I love this amazing organization and have volunteered in some capacity nearly every year.

What volunteer roles have you held?

I have been a counselor in various Camp One Step programs including Summer Camp, Dude Ranch, Winter Camp, and Utah Ski Camp.  As a nurse, I assisted on the Winter Camp Medical Team for a year. For several years, I served as one of the Program Leaders with Stepping Up at Summer Camp.  Currently I have taken a position on the Admin Team as a Staffing Coordinator for Summer Camp.

What keeps you coming back to Camp One Step?

Lifelong friendships.  Camp is like a family.  We support each other, laugh together, and learn from each other.  It’s such a positive atmosphere that it feels magical.  I have met some amazing volunteers and campers over the years.  I also enjoy seeing former campers transition into counselors.  These kids are capable of so much and seeing them realize that is heartwarming.

What do you love the most about the program you lead?

Being on the Admin Team at Summer Camp has been a wonderful opportunity.  As a staffing coordinator I enjoy doing the new counselor interviews.  It’s interesting to discover how people learned about camp, hear about their unique skills/experiences, and what they are looking forward to most.  On the ground at camp, I enjoying helping new and returning counselors problem solve and grow in their roles.

What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give campers?

Give it a try!  We understand that new experiences can be scary and it might be your first time away from home.  Know that camp is a safe place to make new lifelong friends with shared experiences.  Be yourself, laugh, and have fun.  Don’t be afraid to try different activities and step out of your comfort zone, you may discover a new talent or hobby you enjoy.

What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give new or interested volunteers?

Your role is important.  Without dedicated volunteers, the magic of camp is not possible.  Be ready to laugh, try new things, and make some new friends.  Be present with the campers and lead by example.  When you try something new and step out of your comfort zone, it gives kids the courage to take a risk and be themselves.  Our volunteers come with all different types of skills and levels of experience.  There is a place at camp for everyone and we can’t wait to meet you!
