How did you get involved with Camp One Step?

I got involved with Camp One Step through my aunt who was a volunteer on the medical team.

How long have you been involved with our organization?

I started volunteering with Camp One Step as a counselor in December 2010. My first program was Winter Camp and I have been hooked ever since!

What volunteer roles have you held?

I have been a counselor for Summer Camp, Winter Camp, Sibling Camp and Family Camp. I was a Group Leader for Winter Camp and then transitioned into the Program Coordinator role. Before joining the Summer Camp Admin team, I helped with the Summer Camp Orientation team. Once I joined the Summer Camp Admin team, I was the Staff Coordinator for Summer camp, and now am the Summer Camp Programs Coordinator.

I also ran the Chicago Marathon twice for Team One Step!

What keeps you coming back to Camp One Step?

The kids and volunteers! Who wouldn’t want to be surrounded by the happiest bunch of people?! I love seeing the campers grow from year to year and even experience those full circle moments where you get the opportunity to work alongside one of your former campers – that is such a special moment!

What do you love the most about the program you lead?

I absolutely love when all the programs join together at Summer Camp – whether it be at an All-Camp Activity, the Camp Dance, Boat Day, eating in the dining hall… the list goes on! Seeing everyone’s smiling faces, camp songs being sung, birthdays and milestones being celebrated, first time experiences, friendships blossoming. Every day is the BEST day when you’re at Summer Camp!!!

What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give campers?

Keep an open mind and truly be in the moment. This time is so precious – try things you’ve never done before, make more memories with friends, meet new people, laugh a lot, take pictures and most of all HAVE FUN!!! ENJOY EVERY SECOND!!!

What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give new or interested volunteers?

Meet new people, try new things – jump in and lead an activity. Don’t be afraid to ask for help – this is the most supportive group of campers and volunteers you will ever meet. What I truly hope for every volunteer… is to experience the true magic of CAMP – it’s what keeps everyone coming back for more!

What is your current professional work/role?

I am a High School Special Education Teacher in a suburb of Chicago and have been teaching for 11 years now!

What are some of your interests outside of camp?

I love traveling and spending time with friends and family – especially my niece and nephew! =)
