How did you get involved with Camp One Step?
I was diagnosed with ALL leukemia at 18 months old. After 3 years of chemotherapy and 5 years of remission, I was declared cancer-free at the age of 9. During my last year of remission, my mom heard about camp from a friend and, much to my despair, told me I was going. I had never been away from home longer than a day and was terrified at the notion of spending a week with kids I didn’t know. With tears in my eyes, my mom whisked me away to a place called Camp One Step. After I arrived at camp, all of my fears melted away as I was introduced to the warmest and most welcoming group of people in the world. By the end of the week, my mom had to drag me, kicking and screaming, from camp. All the while, I begged her to let me stay another week. After that, I was hooked, and I didn’t miss another year of camp. Throughout the years, I always hoped to be a counselor, and now being a part of the leadership team is a dream come true!
