How did you get involved with Camp One Step?

A close friend of mine was one of the original campers. Every summer she would ask me to come and volunteer with her at camp. One summer I was finally able to volunteer. I went to camp that summer and never stopped coming back!

How long have you been involved with our organization?

I started volunteering with Camp One Step in 2019.

What volunteer roles have you held?

Currently I am one of the program leaders for Excursion at Summer Camp. I have also been a counselor at Family Camp and Winter Camp (virtual). I enjoy joining in on the Connected programs and this past year I traveled to Disney with the Seabees! I am also a member of Team One Step and run the Chicago Marathon in honor of camp.

What keeps you coming back to Camp One Step?

That magical feeling you get when you are at camp! There really is no place like it. Kids get the chance to be kids despite what they have been through or are currently going through. It is amazing to watch them grow from year to year, try new things, and form friendships that will last a lifetime. When you are at camp you see people having fun, laughing, making connections, and just living life. It is really just MAGIC!

What do you love the most about the program you lead?

Sibling Camp is the BEST! I love that this program gives siblings a chance to have fun too! This camp gives siblings their chance to be in the spotlight. They get to interact with other kids who have gone through similar experiences and helps them to realize that they are not alone.

What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give campers?

Camp is about being a kid and living life to the fullest! Don’t be afraid to try new things and never hesitate to talk to someone new. You never know what you might find out about yourself or who you might meet!

What are some words of wisdom or advice that you would give new or interested volunteers?

COME TO CAMP! Step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. You will make friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

What is your current professional work/role?

I am a first grade teacher!

What are some of your interests outside of camp?

When I’m not at camp I am most likely spending time with my friends and family. I love anything and everything that has to do with Disney. I enjoy running and going to Cubs baseball games.
