Family Camp provides an enjoyable break for families who have a child diagnosed with cancer. We welcome all families who have a child 19 years of age or younger that has been diagnosed with any form of cancer. As always, Family Camp is adaptive and inclusive to serve all ability levels. The camp experience provides support from other families who understand how a diagnosis affects the entire family. Program leaders will prepare fun interactive activities along with supporting workshops for the whole family. Families will have a chance to relax, reconnect as a family, and develop friendships with other families who truly understand the challenges that a cancer diagnosis presents.

Current Safety Strategies2024-01-09T16:17:11-05:00

Camp One Step is committed to ensuring the health and safety of the individuals who participate in our camps.  With our camper and volunteer wellbeing in mind, the following safety strategies are in place for all in-person camps:

  • Routine childhood vaccinations, which include diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and chicken pox, are required.  Medical exemptions for campers may be requested and will be reviewed by the Medical Director and Physician Advisor.  COVID-19 and influenza vaccines are recommended, but not required.
  • Pre- and post-camp health screening is required
  • Pre-camp COVID-19 testing is required
  • Masking is optional. Masks will be available for those desiring one.  For travel programs that include air travel, masks will be required when traveling through the airport and when on the plane.
  • HEPA filters will be used in shared sleeping rooms (HEPA filters will only be available at local programs, not travel programs)

Camp One Step encourages any individuals at an increased risk of infection to consult with their healthcare team prior to attending camp to ensure that an in-person camp is a good fit.  If you have any questions or concerns about the above, please send questions to Medical Director, Susie Burke at [email protected].

Camp One Step is so grateful to the community for continuing to put health and safety at the forefront of all that we do.  We hope to see you at camp!

Meet your Program Directors
Terrell, Martha & Danielle

Danielle & Terrell Shell
Program Directors

Danielle and Terrell are the parents of a camper who was diagnosed with cancer at age three. They learned about Camp One Step through their hospital and first became involved with Camp in 2015 when they attended their very first Family Camp. Since then they have become regulars at Family Camp and their children have participated in multiple camps over the years. In 2019, Danielle and Terrell became Program Directors for the Family Camp program continuing to develop and expand this amazing program for the entire family.

Martha Handrich
Program Director

Martha learned about Camp One Step from her daughter’s Nurse Practitioner at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin who thought it would be a great fit for her family. She became involved when her and her family attended their first Family Camp in 2018. Martha then started volunteering for Family Camp in 2020 and hopes to run the Chicago Marathon as part of Team One Step in the near future!

Family Camp Testimonials

“We were able to just be silly and really relax. Cancer definitely forced us to be more serious over the past few years. It was nice to engage in funny games and activities that kept us laughing and brought us back to our pre cancer place.”

– Camper Family

“It was so great having a screen free weekend with the family! Although dad still found ways to read on his phone, he was more present. It’s so hard to get everyone off electronics & into enjoyable activities in real life at the same time. It was also really great finally meeting other families with similar experiences. Our diagnosis & treatment coincided with Covid, so it was great finally meeting people in real life with shared cancer experiences!”

-Camper Family

“We loved the scavenger hunt, the silly games and the movie night outside. (Yes, we elected to be outside and it was chilly, but sooo much fun to be wrapped up in blankets under the stars…we even saw Jupiter that night!)”

Our Medical Team

Camp One Step’s Medical Director, Susie Burke, leads our volunteer medical team. The Camp One Step medical team is comprised of volunteer health care professionals who have a passion for working with children and adolescents who are or have experienced the challenges of a life threatening illness. Even though it is important to have staff with pediatric oncology experience, we also welcome staff with other clinical backgrounds such as general pediatrics, adult oncology, emergency, and ICU to name a few. The medical staff work closely together in teams to address the medical needs of each camper. Our goal is to promote the health and well-being of the campers in an atmosphere of fun.
