Current Safety Strategies2024-01-09T16:17:11-05:00

Camp One Step is committed to ensuring the health and safety of the individuals who participate in our camps.  With our camper and volunteer wellbeing in mind, the following safety strategies are in place for all in-person camps:

  • Routine childhood vaccinations, which include diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and chicken pox, are required.  Medical exemptions for campers may be requested and will be reviewed by the Medical Director and Physician Advisor.  COVID-19 and influenza vaccines are recommended, but not required.
  • Pre- and post-camp health screening is required
  • Pre-camp COVID-19 testing is required
  • Masking is optional. Masks will be available for those desiring one.  For travel programs that include air travel, masks will be required when traveling through the airport and when on the plane.
  • HEPA filters will be used in shared sleeping rooms (HEPA filters will only be available at local programs, not travel programs)

Camp One Step encourages any individuals at an increased risk of infection to consult with their healthcare team prior to attending camp to ensure that an in-person camp is a good fit.  If you have any questions or concerns about the above, please send questions to Medical Director, Susie Burke at [email protected].

Camp One Step is so grateful to the community for continuing to put health and safety at the forefront of all that we do.  We hope to see you at camp!

Thank you to Silent Events for their support of our annual Eve of the Eve dance at Winter Camp!

Meet your Program Leaders

Linsey Smith, Program Director

Linsey was a camper at an oncology camp in California and always knew she wanted to give back by being a counselor someday. When she moved to Chicago she found Camp One Step and was able to fulfill that goal. She started volunteering with Camp One Step in 2010 as a counselor at Summer Camp with the Stepping Up program. Linsey currently serves as the program director for Winter Camp as well as the Washington D.C. program and program leader for the Excel program at Summer Camp. She has previously served as program coordinator for Winter Camp and as a counselor at Summer Camp, Winter Camp, Washington D.C. program, Family Camp, and Chicago Day Camp.

Emily Lenz, Assistant Program Director

Emily discovered Camp One Step while doing a Google search during her nursing school days. She had developed a love for working with oncology patients and wanted a way to connect with them outside of the hospital. She starting volunteering with Camp One Step in 2015 and has been with us ever since! Emily is currently Assistant Program Director for Winter Camp and has also served for the past several years as one of the Program Leaders with EXCEL during Summer Camp. She has also been a counselor for Summer Camp, Sibling Camp, Dude Ranch, Family Camp, Washington D.C., and Winter Camp.

Lexi Chopp, Program Coordinator

Lexi first got involved with Camp One Step as a camper. After years of encouragement from her Nurse Practitioner, and now dear friend, she reluctantly went to Summer Camp. Lexi said her world changed that summer in the very best way, and she jumped at opportunities to try new camps throughout the year after that.  Since 2004, Lexi has been involved with camp – first as a camper, then counselor, program leader, and program coordinator for various camps and programs throughout the year including being a counselor at Summer Camp and Dude Ranch, Program Coordinator for Winter Camp and CONNECTED Programs, and Program Leader for Stepping Up at Summer Camp.

Steph Marder, Program Coordinator

Steph got to know Camp One Step as a camper starting in 2007 and began volunteering after.  She has been involved with camp for 16 years, coming up on her 17th summer!   Steph has been a counselor for Summer Camp and Winter Camp and now holds the roles of program leader for Campcraft during Summer Camp and Program Coordinator for Winter Camp. She has also volunteered at the Camp One Step Annual Gala as well. The people and the indescribable magic that is camp keep her coming back!  In Steph’s words “I love to be able to give back to the place that cured my soul as a camper!”.

Our Medical Team

Camp One Step’s Medical Director, Susie Burke, leads our volunteer medical team. The Camp One Step medical team is comprised of volunteer health care professionals who have a passion for working with children and adolescents who are or have experienced the challenges of a life threatening illness. Even though it is important to have staff with pediatric oncology experience, we also welcome staff with other clinical backgrounds such as general pediatrics, adult oncology, emergency, and ICU to name a few. The medical staff work closely together in teams to address the medical needs of each camper. Our goal is to promote the health and well-being of the campers in an atmosphere of fun.
